Patricia Field, an Emmy-winning costume designer for Sex and the City, needed a new live/work space and chose the Bowery for its location. In order to convert a former commercial kitchen supply store and storage cellar into a double-height duplex with a below-grade indoor garden, a number of structural alterations proved necessary. These comprised demolition of the first floor and entire rear wall of the building; excavation; underpinning; insertion of new steel and concrete floors, catwalk, and roof/terrace; and installation of two skylights, one of which was walkable.
