About

Heidi grew up in Iowa and remembers the wide open skies fondly.  She was educated at Rice University in Houston, Texas; went on to train with Antonio Citterio’s studio in Milan, Italy; and landed in New York one day in June shortly after that.  Since arriving, she has become a licensed professional in the State of New York, received her Masters of Science in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University, opened her own office, become LEED accredited, and completed a number of construction projects under her own name.

In addition to her formal training, she recognizes the impact that clients, consultants, colleagues, and employees of city agencies all have in her education as an architect.  These relationships are vital to the creative process of building in the city.  In fact, the city can be imagined as layers of networks (social, infrastructural, ecological) out of which building projects occasionally arise.

Most recently, the office has been focused on finding opportunities to reinvent ‘existing conditions’ in urban fabric.  The projects range from gut renovations of interior spaces to making major structural modifications to the core and shell of a building to the planning of a partial demolition and new construction of half a city block.  Though more complicated and time-consuming, these rehabilitations prevent sprawl and help reinforce public transit infrastructure.  Intermodal hubs which decrease car dependency by connecting trains, buses, taxis, bicyclists and pedestrians are also an ongoing subject of research and design investigation.  New York City itself has been a source of inspiration lately: the new bike lanes, energy codes, and the locavore movement demonstrate the public appetite for creating sustainable environments.  Architects can contribute to that effort through the skillful manipulation of light, space, and materials.
